How AI Assistants Like ChatGPT and Claude Choose Which Businesses to Recommend

By the NOM Media team · Updated October 2026

Quick answer: AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity build answers from sources they can read and trust: your website, business listings like Google Business Profile and Yelp, reviews, directories, news coverage, Reddit, Wikipedia, and LinkedIn. Businesses that are mentioned often, described consistently, reviewed recently, and explained clearly are more likely to be recommended.

Nobody outside the AI companies knows every detail of how their assistants choose sources, and the systems change constantly. But large studies of AI answers reveal clear patterns that any business can act on.

Pattern 1: they lean on third party sources

Semrush analyzed more than 230,000 prompts in 2025 and found Reddit and Wikipedia were among ChatGPT's most cited domains, while LinkedIn appeared in nearly 15% of Google AI Mode responses. For local questions, BrightLocal found Google Business Profile and Yelp dominate. What others say about you often counts as much as what you say about yourself.

Pattern 2: mentions beat links

In Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands, the number of branded web mentions had a stronger relationship with AI Overview visibility than backlinks or domain rating. Being talked about, in articles, directories, podcasts, and forums, is a signal AI systems pick up.

Pattern 3: fresh and specific wins

Ahrefs found pages cited by AI assistants were on average about 26% newer than typical search results, with ChatGPT showing the strongest preference for recent content. Microsoft's Bing team has also said generative AI values fresh content and that schema helps its models understand pages.

Pattern 4: clear answers get quoted

The Princeton research that coined the term GEO found that content with statistics, quotations, and cited sources was significantly more likely to appear in AI answers. Pages that open with a direct answer, use descriptive headings, and avoid burying facts in JavaScript are easier for any assistant to use.

What you control

Our GEO service works on all five, and our introduction to GEO covers the basics.

The takeaway: AI assistants recommend businesses that are widely mentioned, consistently described, recently reviewed, and clearly explained. All of those are within your control.

Frequently asked questions

Do ChatGPT and Claude give the same recommendations?

Not always. Each assistant uses different search partners, sources, and models, so results differ. That is why we test across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, and Google.

Does posting on Reddit help?

Genuine participation in relevant communities can help, but promotional posting usually backfires. Earned mentions from real customers and partners are far more valuable.

Should I block AI crawlers?

If you want AI assistants to recommend you, blocking their crawlers works against you. Most businesses should allow them.
